The Most Frivolous Story I Ever Wrote

Ahhh the story of a pair of shoes. During one of those elections in the late 80s, my editor-in-chief, Owen Baptiste thought it might be a good idea for me to stay clear of any political stories while my permanent residency was being processed. He sent me to Jamaica to go to some conference, and before I went, I wrote the safest and most frivolous story I could write, one on the most expensive pair of shoes in Trinidad, which cost $650 at the time. Only five women had them. I named the women. Alva Viarruel thought it would be a great idea to have me try on the shoes. When I came back to Trinidad, Andy Smart said, "Hey you had a political story in the news." I said, "Me? I have never written anything remotely political." One of the women I named in the story was Muriel Donawa McDavidson. Apparently, she got some flack for traipsing around Laventille in such shoes.
